Road trip stop in Red Bluff for refueling. It’s 105F with no breeze. We had to make sure we parked near grass so the dogs could get out to potty without burning the pads of their feet. This first dawned on us when the dogs acted like they were lame. Slow thinker here…why would all three dogs turn up lame at the same time? Gads…hot pavement. Poor things.

We are heading up Highway 36 toward the eastern side of
Lassen Volcanic National Park. You have to gas up in Red Bluff because the next gas available is in Chester with the gas station in the 90 population town of Mineral closing last year. Also a good spot to remember to replenish the dogs’ water supply.

The road up to Lassen is like a moonscape with lava rocks spewed from the eruption of Mount Lassen in the early part of the last century. It’s not a great place to stop and go for a hike, although there are plenty of sites along the road to do so. The ground is hot and there is barely any free of sharp rocks. Not really a great place for a pet friendly hike.

Next stop is Mill Creek Lodge, a very pet friendly “resort” with cabins, a river for swimming and easy access to Lassen Park.
