Call me an old-fashioned news gal, but I like to spend a lot of time, sipping the morning tea, and reading classified ads in the Press Democrat. Call me a throw back to the days of thinking that some of the most interesting stories can be found in the classifieds. For years, I would read the lost pet ads and pair them up with the found pet ads. A few times I even called people to say this might be your bet in the column down from you.
There is one woman named Mary, who runs All Aboard Rescue in Santa Rosa. Her classifieds are stories in and of themselves. I find myself reading through them hopeful that she will have worked her magic, writing a classified ad “story” that would get an animal a home. Often times, she did.
This all brings me to an ad that has appeared for the past couple of days for Jack. Jack is a 10-year-old Black Labrador Retriever being cared for at Sonoma County Animal Care and Control. The ad says Jack’s owner/friend died after living together for 10 years. Now Jack is all alone.
“Jack spent his days indoors with his friend and is housebroken and likes other animals. Are you the retirement home is is looking for?”
Jack is 10 and his adoption fee is just $10. That’s a bargain of a dog!
Sadly, having worked in shelters, people turn away from 10 year old dogs. But there are also people who come in searching for 10 year old dogs. There is one fellow I know, who we call every now and then, to ask that he essentially provide hospice care to some of our older dogs. He has done it a few times. One time he took such a dog, an older Labrador, and went on a big camping trip with the dog. He says the dog had a great time. So did the man. The dog died within a few weeks of taking him home. Yet, he was back again recently taking home an arthritic Cattle dog mix.
I know this is a meandering post, but classified ads in the paper may be old-fashioned, not mobile on our smartphones and get our fingers dirty with newsprint, but this ad may find Jack a new home.
Jack’s number is #066088 and the number for Sonoma County Animal Control is 707-565-7100.
