pet food recallThere is yet another pet food recall going on. This one involves Diamond Pet Foods. According to the Associated Press, certain bags of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball are under voluntary recall. The products contain too little thiamine, an essential nutrient to cats.

If cats fed these foods have no other source of nutrition, they could develop thiamine deficiency. If untreated, this disorder could result in death, said the Meta, Mo., manufacturer.

The company updated information on the recall on Tuesday, saying it has confirmed 21 reports of thiamine deficiency in New York and Pennsylvania and the pet food was distributed in 18 states.

Pet food recalls are so frustrating. A few years ago, Menu Foods was involved in a large-scale recall because of a tainted supplement added to dozens of pet foods under different names. There were many deaths and serious illnesses linked to the contaminated food.

The scare prompted many pet owners to switch to raw diets. “Sonoma Pets” published an article about the benefits of a raw food diet at the time and immediately received criticism from some in the Sonoma County veterinary community. Those critical said such diets are equally unsafe because of the dangers of salmonella and other food-borne illnesses. Gads…now what?

What are pet owners to do? People want to do right by their pet. What is the safest way to make sure the food we feed our pets, doesn’t end up making them sick?
