I saved a dog’s life in Williams. It is 104F in this tiny little burg along Interstate 5. Hotter than heck and a lady was leaving to go into Granzellas. She left her poodle mix in the car in the sun. On impulse I shouted “Don’t leave the dog in the car!” I’m pretty sure she heard me because she turned around, got her dog out of the car and joined up with my pack of three (pictured) in the shade with the water bowl.
Again…people! It’s against California law to leave a dog in a car during the hot weather.
Granzellas provides outdoor picnic tables and a grass area where you can eat your takeout food. Bring your own water for the dogs and poop bags because they aren’t provided. Granzellas is a deli, espresso bar, sit down restaurant and sports bar all in one place. Rebuilt after a fire destroyed the building more than a year ago. A tip to animal lovers; avoid the sports bar in the back unless you can handle stuffed heads and a huge polar bear in glass.
Preparations for the trip included packing enough water, food, disposal bags, leashes and life jacket for the Jack Russell Terrier, who thinks she can swim. The JRT is crated during the trip and the two big dogs are on tie down on the floor in the back.
We prefer to go the Lake County route when heading north. The scenery is prettier. You must take it slowly over Mt. St. Helena, which we did, in order to avoid crashes, barfing teens and barfing dogs. All survived.
A pit stop for the humans and one for the dogs then back into the car. Next stop? When the bladder speaks.
