The animal sheltering community is a small one, which means when something happens, like the firing of Amy Cooper as the director of Sonoma County Animal Care and Control, it sets the whole community abuzz.

If Cooper was supposed to right all the wrongs, detailed in a highly critical Grand Jury report, that wasn’t fair. Her or any director would have to be super-manager and pull magical money out of who knows where.

Sonoma County perhaps still has too many shelters and competing interests. Healdsburg’s new shelter plans have raised eyebrows by those aware of the paucity of resources for the caring of homeless animals.

Sonoma County’s animal sheltering community has some new folks at the top. In fact, of the half-dozen shelters and humane organizations operating in the county, most have new directors and managers.

The county shelter is a place of last resort for most animals. It’s no secret that other shelters and rescues “cherry pick” the best animals from the county shelter.

It’s prudent for every agency, county or independent non-profit, to take a close look at what works and what doesn’t in an operation. We look forward to the county supporting what its own Grand Jury recommends.
